The Vampire of the Sea

A mostly factual account of the strangest shark in the ocean.

The Goblin shark, aka the vampire shark, is a shy and sensitive creature who lives in the shadows of the deep sea. Despite his doctor’s recommendations, he’s decided to live his life in utter darkness, thus causing his skin to become entirely translucent, giving him his pinkish or grey blue complexion. This sluggish, squishy fellow has an extendable jaw that he uses to snap up prey with minimal effort. He never did understand why other sharks would deign to chase their food.

Having lived in solitude on the ocean floor for about 125 million years, he often eats alone but remains a deep-seafood connoisseur with a refined pallet for only the most delectable squid and crustaceans - though, he has been known to enjoy a juicy fish or two. Pickin's must be pretty good in the deep sea considering he has been known to clock weights of up to 460 pounds. And that is saying something considering we know barely anything about this mysterious fish and very few have been studied at all. Despite his fascinating appearance and no-doubt his wonderful personality, he prefers to keep to himself and remain a mysterious figure in the deep where he can better hide from the judgmental stares and jokes of stronger, faster, and more popular sharks.
